Happy Halloween! The one day a year we throw all caution, diets, and any sense of good decision making to the wind and stuff ourselves silly with candy from strangers whilst wearing questionable costumes (and also probably imbibing in a witches brew or two...).
This is the first post in a series of covering my favorite, small & local candy stores, starting in NYC -naturally. First up, I visited an oldie. A favorite of mine for the quintessential NY feel of a bodega mixed with the insanity of Candy Land in real life. This, of course, is Economy Candy. A Lower East Side staple that's been serving up sugar since 1937.
While Economy Candy has got your jawbreakers, giant lollipops, starburst, and M&Ms, the real reason to come here is for their extensive amounts of hard to find vintage and international candies and chocolates. Need 5 pound bags of candy? No worries. They've got you covered.
It's small and cramped, but that's because they have gummies, chocolates, dried fruit, and nougat piled to the ceilings. It's what a candy store in the city should look and feel like - nostalgic, colorful and full of old time awesomeness.
When you visit, I can promise you'll feel like a kid (in a candy store) again. I mean, we did...
