The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday. Even though you might not be able to make it down to Louisville for the race you can still enjoy the races from the comforts of your city. So put on a big hat, pick your favorite contender based on their name (wait, that’s not how you do it?), and order a round of mint juleps at these fine establishments.
New York City, Manhattan – Death and Co.
If you can swing getting into this not-so-secret speakeasy without a deathly long wait, you’ll have the chance to order up one of the best traditional mint juleps we’ve had in the city. There are other iterations on the menu, but go for the classic first – then branch out.
New York City, Brooklyn – Maison Premiere
With 6 julep rifts on the menu of this sophisticated oyster bar in Williamsburg you can’t go wrong. Order up a Magnum Opus with rosemary and grapefruit bitters to toast the warm sunny weather that will finally be hitting NYC on Saturday.
Boston – Boston Chops
Though normally known for their cuts of meat and popovers, this Boston establishment is hosting a Maker’s Mark sponsored bash in honor of the Derby. Mint juleps abound, complimentary Southern appetizers will be passed, and there are prizes for the best Derby Dressed. We’d suggest arriving early.
Washington D.C. – Round Robin Bar at the Willard Hotel
If you want traditional, historical, and a tad more class look no further. U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced D.C. to the wonders of the mint julep at the Round Robin Bar, so you know you’re getting the real deal here. Expect a bounty of bowties & bonnets, a beautiful dark wood bar, and (according to the bartenders) the most mint juleps served “this side of Louisville” on Derby Day. Tickets are $80, but they include Southern food, two mint juleps, and a souvenir glass. Make your reservations ASAP.
