I don't know about you, but I'm slightly addicted to drug store beauty products. I think it started back in my first year of college, when my best friend and I would weave our way up and down the aisles of CVS with our American University "Eagle Bucks" cards, preloaded with points we could use like dollars for snacks and purchases in and around campus.
The aisles upon aisles of cheap, easy to access lipsticks, blushes, bronzers, new shampoos, and mani/pedi supplies kept us thumbing through each version of the latest mascara promising bigger lashes and better volume and any other products we could use our points on. Weekly Monday Mani night became a thing. Hours were lost in the aisles.
This is where I learned the drug store secret that changed the way I shop for beauty products - and it's a tip I'm willing to share with you. Heck, tell everyone! All people should know; the return policies at drug stores make buying and testing out beauty products ridiculously easy!
Oh, you thought only nicer high end beauty buys at specialty and departments stores afforded you the ability to test out your products before you dished out your hard earn dollars ahem, or Eagle Bucks...? Not so fast. Most all of the drug stores where you're buying that super pack of extra cushion Charmin also allow you to buy your prepackaged mascaras, shampoos, and lip colors, try them at home, and then return them if you don't like them for a 100% refund. Game. Changer. Am I right?
So go boldly into your nearest drug store, pick up that almost-black-ox-blood lipstick you've been nervous to try, or BB cream for your body you weren't sure of (or read our review here), and see how it works for you. You'll be saving tons over the more luxe labels while resting easy, knowing you can return the item if you don't love it. Read below for the return policies for our go-to drug store beauty spots:
- CVS - Basically everywhere, and the first place I learned of this magical return policy. Return anything, at any time (but don't be a jerk and return something that's almost gone), opened or unopened, with a receipt. They say this covers all beauty/cosmetic purchases. Still undetermined if this also covers things like shampoo, conditioner, skin care products, or fragrances.
- Rite Aid - Return at any time with receipt, open or unopened. This policy extends to hair products, skin products, styling products and fragrances. There are rumors that this policy doesn't extend to online purchases, however there's no mention of this on their website. Purchase away!
- Wallgreens/Duane Reade - Return within 30 days with a receipt, open or unopened. The site says that it is at the discretion of the manager on duty, but so far we haven't had a problem. (Knock on wood.)
Go forth. Be beautiful.
